Habitat creation and management

The key to any populations success is the habitat they occupy. The management of any area can have a massive positive impact on the ecological value of that area as well as the biodiversity within it.

Services we provide: We offer a comprehensive list of habitat enhancement services. For amphibians we can build and vegetate bespoke breeding ponds, build log piles and hibernaculum to any size, plant and manage scrub. In addition to some of these other services we can build basking banks and egg laying piles for reptiles, build artificial setts for badgers, undertake hedge laying and deadheading for dormice, instill bird and bat boxes, as well as many other services.

Case Study: Habitat is the key driver to the success of an established population. We were working on a golf course in Oxfordshire which had been surveyed for GCN two years previously, finding three breeding ponds, two with an expected small population and one with an expected medium population. The course was closed shortly after the surveys were undertaken, and in the proceeding months the absence of people and the improvement in quantity and quality of habitat caused the GCN population to flourish. We arrived on site and working alongside some excellent field ecologists adapted our fence lines and sensitively cleared working areas to minimize the risk to the species on site. We installed 11000m of GCN fencing, 3000m of which was above ground due to root protection zones and active badger setts on site. At the end of trapping nearly 3000 GCN were safely relocated to a established receptor site. Rather than the expected population size of less that 100.
